Paediatric Feeding Disorder

Paediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is a condition in which a child has difficulty with age-appropriate feeding behaviours, such as accepting different types of foods, drinking from a cup or bottle, or self-feeding. PFD condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including medical issues, developmental delays, or behavioural and sensory sensitivities. PFD can have a significant impact on a child's growth, development, and overall quality of life.

Globally, feeding disorders affect 25-45% of the paediatric population and up to 80% of children with disabilities. This condition can affect children of all backgrounds, with a higher likelihood in premature infants, children with autism, and those with genetic syndromes.

Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)

Dysphagia is a medical condition that affects an individual's ability to swallow food or liquids safely and efficiently. It can occur in people of all ages and is caused by delay in oral motor skill development and/ or a range of medical conditions such as stroke, neurological disorders, head and neck cancer, and aging. Feeding and Mealtime Assessment

Assessments are important in determining the cause of feeding and swallowing difficulties. Our comprehensive assessment includes evaluating oral muscle function, observing feeding, and discussing with you the challenges experienced at home. This allows Speech-Language Pathologists to develop a personalized treatment plan that supports safety, client and family goals.
