Paediatric Feeding Disorder

Paediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) is a condition in which a child has difficulty with age-appropriate feeding behaviours, such as accepting different types of foods, drinking from a cup or bottle, or self-feeding. PFD condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including medical issues, developmental delays, or behavioural and sensory sensitivities. PFD can have a significant impact on a child's growth, development, and overall quality of life.

How common is feeding disorder

How common is feeding disorder among children and who is affected?

Globally, feeding disorders affect 25-45% of the paediatric population and up to 80% of children with disabilities. This condition can affect children of all backgrounds, with a higher likelihood in premature infants, children with autism, and those with genetic syndromes.

Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)

Dysphagia is a medical condition that affects an individual's ability to swallow food or liquids safely and efficiently. It can occur in people of all ages and is caused by delay in oral motor skill development and/ or a range of medical conditions such as stroke, neurological disorders, head and neck cancer, and aging. Dysphagia can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia, which can be life-threatening. Early diagnosis and treatment by a team of healthcare professionals, including Speech-Language Pathologists, is essential in managing dysphagia and improving an individual's quality of life.
